Hare Krishna!
Welcome to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness!
So, what is Krishna Consciousness? Our founder acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada explained: “Krishna means God (The All-Attractive). We are all intimately connected with Him because He is our Original Father. But we have forgotten this connection. When we become interested in knowing: What is my connection with God? What is the aim of life? Then we are called Krishna conscious”
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is also known as the Hare Krishna movement. ISKCON belongs to the Gaudiya-Vaisnava sampradāya, a monotheistic tradition within the Vedic or Hindu culture. Our philosophy is based on the teachings of Bhagavad-Gita, Bhagavata Purana (Srimad Bhagavatam), Caitanya-Caritamrita and other Vedic literature meant to help us awaken the desire to reconnect to Krishna by engaging in devotional service to the Lord (Bhakti Yoga) by following Guru, Sadhu and Sastra.
Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (incarnation of Krishna in the mood of His topmost devotee, Srimati Radharani), appeared in Mayapur, West Bengal over 500 years ago to inaugurate the Sankirtan Movement, and He instructed that in this age of kali, the means for deliverance was chanting the Holy Name of the Lord: HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE. Krishna is the Supreme Energetic and Radharani is the Supreme Energy. By chanting this Maha Mantra (Maha = Great, Man = Mind, Tra = To deliver), we are asking the energy of the Lord (HARA/HARE) to engage us in the service of the Lord. Therefore, we are constantly chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra
We follow 4 principles: 1) no meat eating, 2) no illicit sex, 3) no gambling and 4) no intoxication. By following these principles, we are able to uphold the 4 pillars of dharma 1) mercy, 2) cleanliness 3) truthfulness and 4) austerity. All these are important practices for those following bhakti yoga (devotional service).
Currently, ISKCON has temples worldwide as well as eco-villages, free-food distribution projects, hospitals, goshalas, centers, vegetarian restaurants, and hosts a variety of festivals like Ratha-Yatra, bhakti yoga workshops, kirtan melas, etc., for the benefit of society at large.
ISKCON of Phoenix was established in Chandler, Arizona in 1995 and we continue to serve our community and congregation of all ages in various ways. One of our main focuses is on our children and youth through our Invest in Our Children initiative. We believe that by giving the proper foundation and caring for our young people today, we will be preparing the caring leaders of tomorrow.
You are welcome to visit us and ask more questions about our philosophy, practices, food, etc.
